Critical Praise for Philthy Rich
“With a decade-long career, ties to his region’s old guard, and a clever affection for delivery surrounded by repetitive earworm hooks, Philthy’s grown from a Mac Dre-affiliate into a venerable heavyweight of the Yay Area revival sound.” – Mass Appeal
“Oakland’s Philthy Rich has cultivated a loyal Bay Area following and is beginning to make waves on a national level.” – HotNewHipHop
The Video:
A true independent artist who still books his own studio time, coordinates his own video shoots, and organizes his own shows, Philthy Rich never stops working. Fresh off the release of SemCity MoneyMan 4, he plans to drop a video every Friday until the end of the summer. Today, Complex premieres “Barely Know My Name,” featuring verses from Lil B, Mozzy, Mistah F.A.B. and Celly Ru, in which the Oakland rapper and father opens up about the struggles that come with the lifestyle he’s chosen. “They assume that you change but any wise man changes over time,” he explains to Complex. “I might have to be on the road doing shows for a week so that means I’m taking time away from my kids, and then I still have to be in the studio and make music videos. For me to be able to get all that done, it’s serious.” “Barely Know My Name” is the latest single from Philthy Rich’s upcoming Hood Rich 4, following last week’s HotNewHipHop premiere of “Numbers,” a subdued-yet-boastful track with contributions from Skeme and Sauce Walka.
“I got real problems just like anyone else,” says Philthy Rich. “Don’t let the videos or Instagram posts fool you. People don’t know what goes on behind closed doors like all the hate you deal with and the people you gotta take care of. Life in general is tough for everyone–I have to deal with family members and friends passing away, I have to juggle raising and providing for my kids while having to work, just like everyone else. My job might be different from yours but we share the same struggles.”
Recently, Noisey premiered a remix “Piss Codeine,” the opening track from January’s Real N*ggas Back in $tyle, featuring Kevin Gates and Young Dolph. Earlier, WorldStarHipHop premiered the videos for “Way Before” and “Piss Codeine,” both produced by Zaytoven, and “Broke Boy,” featuring Young Dolph. In the lead up to Real N*ggas Back in $tyle, the first in a series of three albums with the same title, Philthy Rich shared a series of singles starting with music videos for the IAMSU-assisted money-making anthem “Make A Living,” which gained more than one million Soundcloud streams, and trunk-thumping Young Scooter collab “Buss Down (Right Now).” Philthy Rich’s latest project, SemCity MoneyMan 4, available for streaming on Soundcloud and for purchase on iTunes. Hood Rich 4 hits stores later this summer.
