After all is said and done, every guy just wants something dope he can call his own. That's the idea behind ZAKEE's new single, "Dope Girl," the latest release from his debut album, Assimilations, currently available for purchase via Green Owl Records/Warner Music Group.
ZAKEE's main inspiration behind "Dope Girl" was to capture the classic feel of music legends like Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, as well as the people he idolized as a child. "Like in most hoods, the coolest cats were the dope boys who walked with a crazy stroll, and the dope fiends who were so high, they didn't know they were strolling," says ZAKEE. The smooth thumping production for "Dope Girl" came from a collaboration with Drughorse, with ZAKEE laying down the drums and bass, while Drughorse accented the beat with guitar riffs.
The washed-out, dreamy video for "Dope Girl" was directed by Joey Angerone and inspired by none other than James Dean, another old-timer who has served as an inspiration for ZAKEE. "I always loved how cool and calm he looked on camera and wanted to evoke that same feeling, but tailored for me," says ZAKEE. Looking like an old home movie, the video celebrates how satisfying it can be to simply hang out in the rain with the things you cherish most. "I have the most amazing days riding around in my Chevy with my two girls: Mary Jane and my Dope Girl," says ZAKEE.

After receiving a dual degree in Mathematics and Computer Engineering at Howard University, ZAKEE decided to really focus on the craft and began to working alongside artists like M.I.A., The Very Best, and Rye-Rye, most notably on the track, "Gangsta Girl" for NBC's Friday Night Lights, which earned the artist a Rolling Stone nomination for Number 1 Artist to Watch. Dazed and Confused named ZAKEE "King of Ku Ku Bass" and he's toured with some of the greatest musicians in the world, such as The Roots, Erykah Badu, M.I.A. and Seun Kuti. ZAKEE has just released his latest project and debut album as an artist, Assimilations, on September 13th via Green Owl Records/ Warner Music Group.
